Frequently Asked Questions

A checking account is a type of bank account designed for everyday financial transactions. Here are some key features:

  • Deposits and Withdrawals: You can deposit money into your checking account and withdraw it as needed. This can be done through ATMs, electronic transfers, or by writing checks.
  • Bill Payments: Checking accounts are often used to pay bills, either by writing checks or setting up automatic electronic payments.
  • Debit Card Access: Most checking accounts come with a debit card, which you can use for purchases and ATM withdrawals.
  • Low or No Interest: Unlike savings accounts, checking accounts typically do not earn interest, or if they do, the interest rate is very low.
  • Fees: Some checking accounts may have fees, such as monthly maintenance fees or overdraft fees, but these can often be avoided by meeting certain requirements.

Checking accounts are a convenient way to manage your daily finances, making it easy to access your money and pay for expenses.

The main differences between a checking account and a savings account are their purposes and features:

Checking Account

  • Purpose: Designed for everyday transactions like paying bills, making purchases, and withdrawing cash.
  • Interest: Typically earns less than a savings account.
  • Accessibility: Funds are easily accessible through online banking, debit cards, checks, and ATMs.
  • Fees: May include monthly maintenance fees, overdraft fees, and ATM fees.

Savings Account

  • Purpose: Intended for saving money over time, such as for emergencies or specific goals.
  • Interest: Usually offers higher interest rates compared to checking accounts, helping your money grow.
  • Accessibility: Limited number of withdrawals per month, often six, to encourage saving.
  • Fees: May have fees for exceeding withdrawal limits or not maintaining a minimum balance.

Having both accounts can help you manage your finances more effectively by using the checking account for daily expenses and the savings account to grow your funds.

  1. Overdraft protection (“ODP”) is subject to approval. There are fees associated with the payment of overdrafts as well as for any items we may return. Fees charged for covering overdrafts will be subtracted from the ODP limit.

  2. For consumer accounts that have ODP:
    • The bank will not charge a fee if the item(s) that are paid results in your account being overdrawn between $0.01 and $10.00 at the end of the business day. If the daily ending balance results in the account being overdrawn more than $10.00 at the end of the business day, every item that overdraws the account will result in an overdraft fee. See below for those amounts.
    • The bank will charge a fee of $14.50 each time we pay an item drawn against non-sufficient funds when the amount of the item is less than $20.00 and is paid within your designated overdraft limit.
    • The bank will charge you a fee of $29.00 for all other items paid or returned when drawn against non-sufficient funds.
    • The maximum daily amount of fees the bank will charge you for overdrawing your account is $145.00.

For consumer accounts that do not have ODP:
    • The bank will not charge a fee if the item(s) that are paid results in your account being overdrawn between $0.01 and $10.00 at the end of the business day. If the daily ending balance results in the account being overdrawn more than $10.00 at the end of the business day, every item that overdraws the account will result in an overdraft fee. See below for those amounts.
    • The bank will charge a fee of $29.00 for all other items paid or returned when drawn against non-sufficient funds.
    • The maximum daily amount of fees the bank will charge you for overdrawing your account is $145.00.

These fees may be imposed for covering overdrafts created by check, in-person withdrawal, ATM withdrawal, Automatic Loan Payments, or other electronic means. Whether the Bank will pay your overdrafts is discretionary and not a right or obligation. The Bank reserves the right not to pay. For example, the bank typically does not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing, regular deposits are not being made to your account, or there are excessive overdrafts on your account. Termination of your overdraft protection and/or account can result if the account remains in overdraft status for a period of 45 consecutive calendar days, and may lead to the account being charged off after 60 consecutive days. Guaranty Bank & Trust also offers other services to you to avoid overdraft fees such as setting up an automatic transfer of funds from another account to the account that needs the funds to prevent overdraft. There may be other fees associated with that service. Automatic Loan Payments can be scheduled through Online Banking which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft practices.
